Diesel Exhaust Fluid

DEF consist of high purity urea (typically crystalline) that is dissolved and suspended in de-ionized water. The approximate ratio of the mixture is 32.5% urea and 67.5% de-ionized water.

When DEF is used with Selective Catalytic Reduction system it helps reduction the amount of NOx emissions. The reduction in emissions is required to meet the EPA published Tier 2 Emission Standards for Light Duty and Heavy Duty Vehicles. This standard regulates new strict emission control that began January 1, 2010.

Quality DEF Solutions / Diesel Exhaust Fluids - How does it all work

Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR )

The SCR system is an after-treatment system, since it treats the vehicle’s

exhaust after combustion.

Here’s how it works:

A fine mist of DEF is injected into the exhaust while the engine is running.

The heat from the exhaust converts the DEF into ammonia.

When the ammonia, mixed with exhaust gases, reaches the SCR

catalyst, the NOx emissions are broken down.

The Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) then captures soot to incinerate

it during regeneration cycles.

Water vapor, nitrogen and reduced emissions exit the exhaust system.
